Our approach

Who we're here for

For every owner of a Babboe or another cargo bike with a defect. Concerned parents who, above all, want to know where they stand.

What we do

We are running a collective action against Babboe and investigating the safety of other cargo bike brands. Through dialogue where possible, through action where necessary.

How we work

Independent and non-profit, backed by the Fietsersbond. Transparent, with no registration or membership fees. Participation is on a no win, no fee basis.

Registering: am I eligible?

You can also register with Stichting Veilige Bakfiets if you made use of the recall, or if your cargo bike was not covered by the recall according to Babboe.

You have or had a Babboe

You can join the action if you have or have had a (second-hand) Babboe. Even if, according to Babboe, your cargo bike was not covered by the recall.

You already opted for the scheme

If your Babboe was replaced with a new cargo bike, your cargo bike was inspected or repaired, or you received a voucher for a new cargo bike — you can still register with the Foundation.

You have another brand

If you have a cargo bike of another brand that shows defects, you can report it to us by sending an e-mail to info@veiligebakfiets.nl. Based on the reports we receive, we may be able to take action against other brands in the future.

You're not on your own

Four guarantees that let you participate with peace of mind. No small print, no surprises afterwards.

Collective

You join a collective and authorise Stichting Veilige Bakfiets to represent your interests. You can withdraw your support at any time.

No win, no fee

Participation is on a 'no win, no fee' basis: the external funder bears the costs and the risks. If the action succeeds, the funder receives a fee based on your compensation.

With the Fietsersbond

The largest interest group for cyclists in the Netherlands supports Stichting Veilige Bakfiets. That's real backing.

Transparent

Stichting Veilige Bakfiets is organised according to the principles of the Dutch Claim Code 2019. That means our governance, the progress of the proceedings and our terms are public.

From group to collective

How thousands of individual parents' stories grew into one collective action.

  1. Recognition

In February 2024 the NVWA imposed a sales ban on Babboe due to an increased risk of frame breakage. Around 22,000 cargo bikes were recalled. The Foundation believes Babboe should never have put the unsafe cargo bikes on the market.

  2. Powerlessness

A scheme followed, but research among nearly 4,000 cargo bike owners shows that many are dissatisfied. Many questions have remained unanswered. Against a manufacturer like Accell, it is hard to get justice on your own.

  3. Solution

In December 2024 Stichting Veilige Bakfiets was founded, supported by the Fietsersbond. Together we can make a stand.

  4. Invitation

Register now. Together we are stronger! You're no longer on your own and you pay nothing upfront.

"Anyone who buys a cargo bike trusts that their children are safe. Together we make sure that trust is earned back."

Frequently asked questions

Does registering cost money?

No. Registering is free. You pay no registration fees and you don't have to advance any costs for potential proceedings: these are paid by an external litigation funder ('no win no fee'). In return, in the event of a settlement or a successful judgment you pay the litigation funder at most 25% plus any applicable VAT of your compensation.

  • No result? Then you pay nothing. The Foundation and its litigation funder bear the financial risk.
  • A result? In the event of a settlement or a successful judgment, the litigation funder is reimbursed for the costs advanced plus a fee for the financial risk taken, at most 25% plus any applicable VAT.
I already opted for Babboe's scheme. Is registering still worthwhile?

Yes. Even if you received a voucher or your cargo bike was replaced, inspected or repaired, you may not have been fully compensated for your damage.

I already registered via bakfietsclaim.nl. Do I need to do anything?

Through the reporting point bakfietsclaim.nl we assessed the scale of the problem and the options for compensating affected cargo bike owners. If you registered there, we have kept you regularly informed about the Foundation's progress. If any further action is needed from you, we will send you an e-mail with instructions.

Why should I register now?

The Foundation will shortly press ahead with its collective damages proceedings and is once again inviting Babboe to reach a constructive solution. The larger the group, the stronger our position.

My cargo bike is a brand other than Babboe.

At the moment, the collective action of Stichting Veilige Bakfiets is directed only against Babboe. If you have a cargo bike of another brand that shows defects, you can report it to us by sending an e-mail to info@veiligebakfiets.nl. Based on the reports we receive, we may be able to take action against other brands in the future.
